During the last Full Council meeting on September 27th, Councillors David Selby and Pete Lewington both brought forward motions to debate.

Cllr David Selby proposed a motion relating to the Covid Regeneration Fund and raised the below motion.

“This Council notes that currently Citizens Advice Powys based in Newtown is facing an increase of enquiries of 22% over last year and this rate of increase is likely to continue during this year. Also noting that there is an uncommitted balance remaining of approximately £3,787 in our Covid Recovery Fund, this council makes an immediate grant from this fund of the remaining funds to support the work of the Citizens Advice Newtown Advisors during this difficult period.”

On a separate topic Cllr Pete Lewington raised a motion for the Council to support Newtown Sports Club’s funding requests for Modern fit for purpose changing room facilities. The club provides sporting facilities covering rugby, cricket and tennis for all ages at the recreation ground in Newtown. The club are wanting to build modern, fit for purpose changing room facilities to serve the sports provided as the existing changing rooms are not fit for purpose as requirements in relation to Health and safety, Child protection, female and disabled participation have quite rightly increased.

The Club has proposed a scheme to build two new changing rooms which embrace carbon neutral construction methods and green energy sources. Whilst the Town Council is unable to provide any financial assistance its support of the clubs funding applications coordinated through Powys County Council would be extremely helpful and therefore Cllr Pete Lewington proposed the following motion:

“The Town Council requests to the Town Clerk to write to the Sports Development manager (Elin Wozencraft) at Powys County Council who is supporting the club with their funding applications confirming the Town Council’s support of the club’s intentions to upgrade the changing room facilities to enable the club to continue to make its massive contribution to health and wellbeing in Newtown and the surround areas”.

Both motions were resolved in support by Newtown & Lllanllwchaiarn Town Council Councillors
