Accessible Stroll 4 – Two Town Parks

A green walk, this stroll encompasses two parks and many interesting features.

Starting at the Newtown Medical Practice in Park Street, it crosses the town centre park, then reaches the historic Dolerw Park by crossing the River Severn on the pedestrian suspension bridge. It is a flat walk on paved paths and grass paths reinforced with mesh. There are frequent resting places and a lovely picnic area next to the river.

Directions

  1. Leave the medical practice and cross Park Street to the street immediately opposite, next to the vaccination centre. It has a large sign next to it saying ‘Y Parc’.
  2. On your right you will see the remains of the 13th century motte and bailey. Follow the road around to the right before the Job Centre Plus offices to pass the front of the Town Hall.
  3. Take the paved path directly ahead to pass Oriel Davies Gallery on your right. At the end of the path turn left on the pavement at Back Lane Car Park. At this junction there are public toilets on your right, behind of the gallery.
  4. The pavement takes you to Hafan yr Afon, with a café and community centre. Turn right to reach and cross the footbridge over the river.
  5. At the end of the bridge you are in Dolerw Park, the former estate of Pryce-Jones. Take the left hand paved path and you will pass a bench on your right and a community seating area on your left.
  6. A short distance later you will come to a notice board and another board describing the Dolerw Park Meander Meadows This describes the reinforced grass walk ahead of you that you now follow, passing bug hotels and other benches before reaching a picnic area with seating and table. This grass path will lead you back to the paved path where you turn right to arrive at the pedestrian bridge to cross back over the river to Hafan yr Afon.
  7. Here you can either retrace your steps to the medical practice for a shorter walk of 1.2 miles or turn right taking the higher path. It passes the playpark and follows a fence along the path and around to the left, passing the scout hut till you reach the road by the police station.
  8. Turn left and you will come to the library at Park Street.
  9. Turn left again to arrive back at the starting point of the medical practice.
