Your Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council is delighted to announce the official opening of the Warp & Weft Pocket Park – Community Garden, located on Union Street, Newtown. This exciting development has transformed a simple grass area into a sustainable, wildlife-friendly haven that provides a serene retreat for both residents and visitors.
The land was transferred some years ago from the Welsh Government to town council with a covenant that it should be for recreational use.
In response to the Climate Emergency declaration, the Town Council has prioritised sustainability in the management of this space. The Warp & Weft Pocket Park encourages wildlife, provides a sanctuary for nature, and offers a peaceful spot for quiet contemplation. This £19,000 project, which includes £9,000 funded by the Powys Nature Partnership grant, has successfully established this vibrant community garden for future generations.
The design and implementation of the garden were shaped by extensive community consultation. Every household in the area received a comprehensive consultation document, allowing residents to share their feedback and ensure their voices were integral to the project. Your town council is grateful for those who responded with constructive ideas. Architects have thoughtfully designed the garden to include flowerbeds, accessible seating, and a distinctive laser-cut ‘corten’ sign. This sign honours the area’s weaving and textile industrial history and features an excerpt from the poem “Welsh Flannel” by George Thomas, circa 1830. The garden also boasts pollinator shrubs, wildflowers, and seating positioned to ensure accessibility for all community members.
The Warp & Weft Pocket Park is more than just a green space; it is a poignant reminder of the industrious past that once characterised the area. Surrounded by historic buildings that were central to the textile and weaving industry, this green space stands as a testament to the town’s rich heritage. Today, it serves as a tranquil retreat, allowing visitors to connect with nature and reflect on the area’s vibrant history. Local landscaper Andrew Evans Landscapes completed the Union Street project, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail throughout the process.
In attendance at the official opening were the Mayor Cllr Mike Childs, Deputy Mayor Cllr Margaret Lewington, Councillor Pete Lewington, Councillor Val Howard, Councillor Richard White, Ed Humphreys (Town Clerk), Hannah Morris (Operations Officer), and children from Penygloddfa CP School.
Your Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council invites all community members to join enjoy and celebrate this wonderful new addition to our town. The Warp & Weft Pocket Park – Community Garden is now open for everyone to enjoy, offering a beautiful, tranquil space in the heart of Newtown.
