During a recent Newtown Network meeting, Lingen Davies Cancer Care reported progress with its Cancer Champion initiative, a crucial training programme aimed at empowering individuals to become advocates for cancer awareness and early detection. As an active participant in the Newtown Network, Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council is supportive of this initiative.
The Newtown Network, facilitated by the Town Council, was established in response to the challenges posed by Covid-19, and continues to serve as a platform for weekly information exchange. Comprising various community organisations such as the Town Council, Salvation Army, PAVO, POBL Group, Kaleidoscope, Cultivate, Lingen Davies Cancer Care, Ponthafren Association, Compass Community Care Ltd, All Saints Church, Newtown Food Surplus, Citizens Advice Powys, and Powys CC Children, Young People, & Families Team, the Newtown Network is committed to fostering collaboration and addressing community needs.
During the meeting, the Lingen Davies representative provided details regarding their forthcoming Cancer Champion training session scheduled for the 29th of February at Plas Dolerw in Newtown. Although most Newtown Network members have already registered, there are a few available spots remaining. Therefore, the town council extends an invitation to anyone interested in participating in this valuable training opportunity.
The Cancer Champion training sessions are designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and confidence to engage in conversations about the importance of early detection of cancer symptoms and the uptake of screening services. These sessions, which are free of charge and last for three hours, cover essential topics such as cancer awareness, the significance of early diagnosis, screening procedures, and debunking common misconceptions.
Upon completion of the training, participants are not obligated to dedicate additional time to the role; their role primarily involves providing feedback on their experiences and any encountered barriers. Ongoing support for Cancer Champions is offered by the dedicated Cancer Champion Coordinator.

Er bod y rhan fwyaf o aelodau Rhwydwaith Newtown eisoes wedi cofrestru, mae ychydig o leoedd ar gael o hyd. Felly, mae’r cyngor tref yn estyn gwahoddiad i unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb mewn cymryd rhan yn y cyfle hyfforddi gwerthfawr hwn.
Mae sesiynau hyfforddi Ymgyrchwyr y Campfa wedi’u hanelu at roi sgiliau ac hyder i unigolion i ymgysylltu mewn sgyrsiau am bwysigrwydd cynnar darganfod arwyddion a symptomau canser a manteisio ar wasanaethau sgrinio. Mae’r sesiynau hyn, sy’n rhad ac am ddim ac yn para am dri awr, yn cwmpasu pynciau hanfodol fel ymwybyddiaeth o ganser, pwysigrwydd diagnosis cynnar, dulliau sgrinio, a datguddio anghywirdebau cyffredin.
Ar ôl cwblhau’r hyfforddiant, nid oes rhaid i gyfranogwyr ymrwymo i ddod â mwy o amser at y rôl; eu prif swyddogaeth yw rhoi adborth ar eu profiadau ac unrhyw rwystrau a brofwyd. Mae cefnogaeth barhaus ar gyfer Ymgyrchwyr y Campfa yn cael ei darparu gan y Cydlynydd Ymgyrchwyr y Campfa ymroddedig.
