Your Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council was honoured to lead the heartfelt commemorations for the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Newtown last week. Mayor Cllr Mike Childs and Deputy Mayor Cllr Margaret Lewington delivered moving speeches at the war memorial on Thursday 6th June, setting a solemn and respectful tone for the occasion. The ceremony included the laying of flowers, a poignant gesture shared with the British Legion and local schoolchildren, symbolising the community’s collective remembrance. The event was broadcast live over social media.

On Friday, your Town Council transformed Dolerw Park into a nostalgic celebration with an evening of 1940s-inspired entertainment. The event featured the vibrant performances of the Blitz Dancers, melodies by D-Day Dawn, and the stirring sounds of the Newtown Silver Band. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of unity and reflection, bringing the community together in a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served.

Your Town Council felt it was essential to remember such a pivotal moment in history. This event impacted each and every one of us, and it is only fitting that we come together to acknowledge and honour it. The commemoration not only celebrated our shared history but also reinforced the values of resilience, solidarity and co-operation that continue to shape our community.
