We are pleased to report that Councillor John Byrne has been elected as the new Mayor of Newtown & Lllanllwchaiarn for the municipal year 2022/23 at Council Annual Meeting on Monday 23rd May 2022.

An active Councillor in Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn, Cllr John joined the council in July 2018. Commenting on becoming Mayor “It is a great honour to be elected to office by fellow councillors. I am keen to continue with the progressive work already achieved by the council and hope I can keep up the momentum set by our outgoing Mayor.

I along with other councillors take our positions seriously and only want the best for our town and its citizens. I look forward to working with the dedicated staff employed by the council and fellow councillors over the next 12 months. I would also like to encourage new councillors to fill the six vacancies we have and be part of the team to make positive changes in our town to benefit all”.

The Deputy Mayor elected for this year is Cllr Mike Childs. Commenting on his recent appointment “ It’s an honour to follow in the footsteps of all those great leaders that Newtown has had over the years. There are many organisations and helpful individuals in Newtown, that keep the town functioning and the vulnerable cared for. I’m sure that if we all work together, then we can get through these difficult times”

During the meeting on Monday Cllr John Bryne thanked Cllr Richard Williams, previous Mayor of Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn for his dynamic and energic approach and for all of his hard work and commitment to the role.

Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys, said “On behalf of all staff I welcome the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor to office for the next 12 months. Their duties are primarily to chair council meetings and to undertake civic ceremonial as first citizen and ambassador for the town. Both roles can be demanding and time consuming, so staff and I very much look forward to supporting them in office”.
