A fantastic event was held in Newtown at the Elephant & Castle Hotel on Friday 3rd June 2022 to mark the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations.

After disappointment that the original plans for Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council to host an event on High Street could not go ahead a joint collaborative event was planned with The Elephant & Castle.

The community of Newtown enjoyed free children’s activities from 12-3pm, including crown making, Jubilee colouring, bouncy castle and face painting. Free children’s squash and discounted hot dogs & chips were provided by the hotel.

Newtown Silver Band played a lovely hour-long session, which was well received and included a fanfare opening and a speech by the newly appointed Mayor Cllr John Bryne accompanied by Deputy Mayor Cllr Mike Childs.

Mayor of Newtown Cllr John Bryne commented “Whilst it was a disappointment that the event couldn’t proceed on High Street as planned, a great alternative was provided for the people of Newtown. As my first official engagement it was a pleasure to see so many people attending and enjoying the event. Thanks to Ian and his team at the Elephant and Castle for the collaborative work with Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council and the hard work put in by the town council staff”.

Participants to the event enjoyed an afternoon of traditional tea dancing and enjoyed a performance by new young local artist Meg Louise. Afternoon Teas were available for £5 per person and we were well received and enjoyed by many.   Newtown & Llanllwchairn Town Council would like to offer thanks to all those involved in the Jubilee Event, coming together to provide a wonderful for the community of Newtown.
