During the last Full Council meeting it was resolved to host a Remembrance Parade this year, along the usual lines kindly organised by the Royal British Legion.
Each year in November, Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council lead the civic remembrance on behalf of the community. The Town Council are in a fortunate position that the arrangements are made and marshalled by the Newtown Branch of the Royal British Legion, with the assistance of Rev Nia Morris and the Newtown Silver Band.
In 2020, due to Covid-19 pandemic, the arrangements were more modest than usual but took place nevertheless on Remembrance Sunday 8th November and Armistice Day 11th November. The traditional parade from Broad Street, service at the Baptist church, parade along Back Road and the post-parade refreshments were cancelled. The short ceremony with wreath laying at the Newtown Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday 8th Nov and a short ceremony on Armistice Day Wednesday 11th November. Members of the public were encouraged to remain at home or if in attendance to ensure social distancing rules were in place. The events were live streamed by the Town Council.
The Council also resolved to augment the ceremonies on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday at Newtown Cenotaph with live streaming. Further details regarding the arrangements will be issued in due course.
