Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has received its first ‘Community Flag Request’ and will today be raising the LGBTQ+ Rainbow flag from Brisco House to show support of the first Pride Event being held in Powys in Llandrindod Wells this weekend. The flag will be raised on Friday 15th July until Monday 18th July.
Powys Pride is an annual celebration of and by the LGBTQIA+ community across all of Powys. The festival is taking place this Saturday 16th July in Llandrindod Wells, providing a family friendly day full of activities on The Green and an evening of celebrations at the Pavillion. Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has two flag poles on the outside of Brisco House building at the corner of Broad Street and Severn Street. The Town Council has a Flag Flying Policy which outlines when and how the Council will fly flags from the two poles. Usually the Welsh National Flag (Y Ddraig Goch) and Union Flag are flown. Occasionally the Union Flag is replaced by other flags.
The Town Council’s Flag Flying Policy invites requests from the community which are “consistent with the published values of the Town Council” under the “Community Request” flags can be flown to celebrate international, national and community wide events or causes which are non-denominational, charitable and not-for-profit. Applications are welcomed by individuals who live, work or learn in Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn; or organisations or groups based in or operating in Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn.

Flags are symbols which give a visual message about the town and the council values to the local community and to the outside world, and flying the LGBTQ+ Rainbow flag demonstrates the commitment.”
