We are now three weeks into the “lock down”. I am sure to many it feels it a lot longer than this. Speculation about an end to the current restrictions is unhelpful, but I tell myself and others who ask that we are probably not half way through yet.
The Newtown Network pulling together the efforts of the Town Council, Ponthafren, local Churches, Salvation Army, PAVO and over 100 volunteers across town is working hard supporting those who need help and assistance. Over the next week everyone in the town will hear more from local “Angels” in their area. In addition a new Newtown Network Service directory is being published and will be available soon.
There is, of course, another volunteer army of friends and neighbours who shop for those who need help, collect prescriptions, and chat to each other keeping the town and its residents as a family. No one should feel alone and I urge anyone who needs support of any kind to ask and to make use of the services new and old that are now in place in Newtown.Thank you to everyone who is joining in and keeping to the movement restrictions that we have to endure for the sake of everyone around us.
There are front line services that are essential for our town. This week I would particularly like to thank the team of Council Recycling and Waste staff (our bin men) working to keep this vital service going. Also our Royal Mail men and women delivering to our homes. They are handling record amounts of parcels and post in these difficult times. Thank you to all.When we see the scenes of the NHS staff working in Intensive Care units we know our “front line” is there in these hospitals. The whole of our NHS deserves our support, and we show that every Thursday evenings with our neighbourhood clapping, and in other ways.
The Town Council has made one extra gesture this week by turning the new lights on St Mary’s Church to blue. The lights will remain blue while the current situation remains.We remain proud of our NHS and proud of our town.
