New Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn.

At the meeting of the full council on Tuesday May 28th the council elected the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn:

Mayor Cllr. David Selby

Deputy Mayor Cllr. Richard White

Outgoing Mayor Cllr. Sue Newham has handed over the chain to Cllr. Selby after two years as Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn; “It has been a great honour and pleasure to be mayor for the last two years. It has been an extremely busy time and I am delighted with the amount of investment that has been put into Newtown, with more important and exciting changes in the pipeline. The people of Newtown are its greatest asset. Their sense of community, hard work and volunteering help to make the town vibrant and friendly.

I want to thank my fellow councillors and the wonderful team of staff who work for the council for everything they do for the benefit of Newtown. David Selby will be a really good mayor and I will be delighted to serve on the council with him.”

Cllr David Selby began his first meeting as Mayor with a statement:

“I am honoured to have been elected as the new Mayor of Newtown yesterday evening.

I moved to Newtown 28 years ago and I feel myself a Newtonian.  Whether on Powys County Council or Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council I will continue to work to improve our town and to help continue to keep it the great community that it is.

I would like to work with community and charity groups in the town to support their work and fund raising, and would welcome invitations to events and meetings. I will lead Mayor’s litter picks to help keep our town tidy.

This year’s Mayor’s charity is Kaleidoscope – which works in our town supporting those struggling with alcohol and drug issues.  I will give more details soon.

The town Council will continue its Facebook live sessions, when you will have the opportunity to question me and the other town councillors.  Our next event is on Wednesday 19th June at 7pm.

Thank you and I look forward to working with town residents over the next year.”

Cllr. Richard White made the following statement on becoming Deputy Mayor; “I am honoured and delighted to have been elected as Deputy Mayor having served on the Town Council for a number of years. I shall endeavour to fulfil the role to the best of my ability by promoting the town at every opportunity and supporting the Mayor in his important task.

‘Open Newtown’ and other initiatives currently in progress together with the benefits to the town of the recently opened by-pass make these exciting times for Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn. Under the expert leadership of our Town Clerk and his accomplished team of officers all augurs well for the future both for residents and visitors.
