Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council pick up One Voice Wales awards.

Last week Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council were invited to One Voice Wales’ Innovative Practice Annual Awards Conference in Builth Wells and returned with a Highly Commended award in ‘Heritage Initiative’ and a Commended award in ‘Community Engagement Initiative’.

The Heritage Initiative award was for Newtown Town Council’s Celebrating John Roberts project from 2017 which was concluded with a plaque being erected in Frolic Street to mark John Robert’s life More information on the Celebrating John Roberts project can be found on our website: newtown.org.uk/heritage-trail/john-roberts

“It was very encouraging that Newtown received two awards at the One Voice Wales awards event. There are town and community councils across Wales doing a tremendous job of supporting their local communities.” Said Mayor of Newtown, Cllr Sue Newham, “Barry and Carmarthen Town Councils won awards in a number of categories. I am delighted that Newtown can hold it’s head up amongst stiff competition as a forward thinking and innovative council. I am hoping that we might win a glass trophy next year!”

One Voice Wales is the principle organisation that represents and supports community and town councils and provides a strong voice for councils in Wales. The national awards are held annually and are now in their second year.

The second award came for Newtown Town Council’s community engagement using Facebook Live, the Council holds a monthly Facebook Live session giving residents a chance to get involved and ask questions on the topics being discussed. We go live at 7:00pm on the third Wednesday of the month and the next session is on 18th April. Like our Facebook page here: facebook.com/newtownllanllwchaiarntowncouncil

Town Clerk Ed Humphries on the awards; “The councillor and staff are working hard to meet the ambitious of the town, so national recognition at the One Voice Wales Awards is encouraging.  However the important thing is not the awards themselves, but the work behind them to provide better service to the town and to strengthen the council to go about it in a better way.”
