Newtown And Llanllwchaiarn Town Council Agrees Its Budget For The Coming Year 2018/19.
The total spending for next year is £699,494 up from £591,673 this year. After allowing for grants and other income, the total precept for the year will be £645,474 – a rate of £149.62 for a Band D property, up from £126.68 this year. This is the equivalent of £2.87 per week for Council Tax payers, for town council services. This is the smallest proportion of the Council Tax after County Council, Police Service and Fire & Rescue Service.
Cllr David Selby, Chair of the Council’s Resources Committee says “the major project for 2018/19 is bringing back control of the town’s river park lands from Powys County Council. Working with the Going Green For A Living Community Land Trust, the Town Council will be responsible for the upkeep of the river park lands from 1st April, once agreement has been reached with Powys County Council. £47,000 will be spent next year on this project. The Town Council awaits the outcome of the £1.1M Lottery bid for other improvements to the land. The Town Council will also start work on a major improvement of the play area in the park. Town Centre flower beds will also be improved and repairs made to Town Council owned and operated buildings.”
Cllr David Selby continued – “no one likes an increase – but a lot is being achieved for a relatively small weekly charge. Newtown Town Council is responsible for the town’s food festival and winter festival including the Christmas lights, for developing tourism in the town, the two toilet blocks, Northside Hall, Sarah Brisco House, the Community Grants and the Tourism Grants. The Town Council also financially supports the Citizens Advice Newtown Project.
