Throughout August, the Branching Out volunteers have been hard at work helping to keep Newtown’s public spaces clean, green and welcoming for all.

From weeding and litter picking to watering and tidying, the team has been out in force across the town centre, making a visible difference to some of our most loved community spaces.

Highlights from August

  • 4 August: Volunteers tackled invasive grasses and carried out a thorough litter pick and weed along Union Street and the High Street.
  • 11 August: The team focused on Severn Street, carefully removing chickweed from between the Busy Lizzies in the raised beds and tidying and cutting back in the Robert Owen memorial garden.
  • 18 August: A busy day of watering with the bowser in the Robert Owen Memorial Garden, Severn Street raised beds, and the butterfly and bee bed in St Mary’s Churchyard, followed by a litter pick and weed on the north side of the High Street.
  • 25 August (Bank Holiday): More tidying and cutting back in the Robert Owen Memorial Garden, where volunteers also tended to damaged plants.

Spreading the Word

The project continues to be promoted through:

  • Posters and electronic information boards around town
  • The Cultivate Volunteering Opportunities booklet
  • Branded t-shirts worn by volunteers
  • Support from the PAVO Volunteering Officer, helping connect interested residents to the project

We’re incredibly proud of the dedication and community spirit shown by everyone involved. Your efforts are helping to make Newtown a cleaner, greener, and more vibrant place for residents and visitors alike.

The group is always looking for new members.  If you’d like to join, please contact stephanieg@cultivate.uk.com or enquiries@newtown.org.uk
