The community in Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn were asked for their feedback about improvements required for footpaths and cycle paths as part of the consultations for the Newtown Place Plan. The Town Council has now forwarded these comments to the relevant team at Powys County Council for action.
Many of the suggestions were submitted at the time of the publication of the place plan in 2021 and have been incorporated into Powys County Council’s current plan for improvements (Active Travel Network Map).
Suggestions were made for improvements to areas throughout the town including:
- Canal Road
- Llanllwchaiarn
- Penygloddfa
- Milford Road
- New Road/Train Station access
More recent suggestions were made by town councillors in the following areas:
Dolerw Park, the route from the town centre to the hospital and wheelchair access from Llanidloes Road to the town centre.
The County Council acknowledges these have been logged and will be considered in future active travel network plans.
More details of the specific areas highlighted can be found in the Place Plan documents on the town council website:

This project is one of a large number of projects highlighted for action by the community in the Place Plan. The Town Council works on many other projects highlighted by the community in the Place Plan. Note: The Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Place Plan 2021-36 is a major document for the community. It was based on the largest public consultation in recent years, which took place between 2019-2021 – over 7,000 comments were received! The resulting plan sets out planning policies and the community’s aspirations on a wide range of topics for the 15 years between 2021-2036. Much of your town council’s work is shaped by what the community has put into the Place Plan. The Place Plan was adopted by your town council in 2021. It was also adopted by Powys County Council as Supplementary Planning Guidance to the Local Development Plan. This means that all planning applications put forward by the community, will now be assessed against the local planning policies set out in the Place Plan.
